How Do I Look Up Warrants in Iowa?

IowaCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on IowaCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

You can use IowaCourts.us to locate a warrant in Iowa, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Iowa's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. When available, a search reveals the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, among other details depending on the record type and issuing county.

Iowa has 99 counties — more than any state except Texas — and each operates its own clerk of court office with independently maintained case dockets. The state does run a law enforcement warrant network called the IOWA System (Iowa On-line Warrants & Articles), but that database is restricted to the more than 450 police departments, sheriff's offices, and criminal justice agencies connected to it. There is no public-facing portal where a private citizen can query the IOWA System directly. The closest public equivalent is Iowa Courts Online, which hosts the statewide electronic docket, but that system is designed for case-level searches — not for surfacing active warrants across jurisdictions.

The practical effect is that someone looking for warrant information has to know, or correctly guess, which county issued it. That is a harder task in Iowa than in many states, given the sheer number of counties and the fact that some of the smallest — Ohio County, for instance, with fewer than 7,000 residents — still maintain their own separate court dockets. IowaCourts.us addresses this by drawing from multiple public sources, so a single name search can surface records that might otherwise require contacting several county offices individually.

Are Warrants Public Information in Iowa?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants become accessible to the public once they have been executed or once the associated case appears on the court docket. Iowa's public records framework is anchored in Chapter 22 of the Iowa Code, which grants every person the right to examine and copy public records. Section 22.2 is unambiguous: the right to examine a public record includes the right to do so without charge while the record is in the custodian's physical possession.

That breadth has limits. Section 22.7(5) declares peace officers' investigative reports confidential, which encompasses search warrant affidavits and applications during an active investigation. Even after an investigation closes, the statute requires that "the date, time, specific location, and immediate facts and circumstances surrounding a crime or incident" be released — but the underlying investigative file, including search warrant materials, may remain sealed unless a court orders otherwise. Arrest warrants tied to pending investigations can similarly stay out of public view until the subject is apprehended or the case reaches the court docket.

Court records themselves follow a separate access regime. The Iowa Judicial Branch treats case filings as public once they enter the electronic docket, but individual documents attached to a case — particularly sealed orders, juvenile records, and mental health proceedings — are excluded. A record can therefore be legally public in the abstract yet remain unpublished if no agency has posted it online and the requesting party has not made a formal records request under Chapter 22.

How to Search for a Warrant in Iowa

  1. Use IowaCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
  2. Search Iowa Courts Online. The Iowa Courts Online portal provides free access to the electronic docket maintained by all 99 county clerk of court offices. You can search by name, case number, or citation number without creating an account. The system displays case status, scheduled hearings, charges, and dispositions, but it does not flag active warrants as a distinct category — you will need to review the chronological case summary to identify whether a warrant has been issued. Full case documents are available only on public access terminals at the courthouse where the case was filed.
  3. Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the case may have originated. Most Iowa sheriff's offices will confirm whether an active warrant exists over the phone. The ISSDA Sheriff Directory maintained by the Iowa State Sheriffs' and Deputies' Association lists contact information for all 99 offices.
  4. Visit in person. The clerk of court in any Iowa county can search the docket for warrant records. If you are inquiring about a warrant issued for yourself, be aware that appearing in person at a law enforcement facility may result in immediate arrest if an active warrant is confirmed.
  5. Retain an attorney. A licensed Iowa attorney can make discreet inquiries through the court or prosecutor's office and can access sealed or confidential filings that are not available to the general public.

How Long Is a Warrant Active in Iowa?

Iowa's statutes do not set an expiration date for arrest warrants or bench warrants — once issued under Iowa Code §804.1, they remain active until the subject is arrested, the warrant is recalled by the issuing judge, or the underlying charge is dismissed. Search warrants are the exception: §808.8 requires execution within ten days of issuance and voids any search warrant not executed within that window. Iowa does permit magistrates to issue a citation instead of an arrest warrant for certain offenses, and if the cited person fails to appear, the magistrate may then convert the citation into a warrant — which itself carries no expiration.

Iowa Warrant Records by County

Warrants in Iowa are issued and maintained at the county level by each county's magistrate, district associate, or district court. The state does not operate a publicly searchable centralized warrant database. The IOWA System maintained by the Iowa Department of Public Safety aggregates warrant data for law enforcement use, but access is restricted to authorized criminal justice agencies. A person conducting their own search must query individual counties through Iowa Courts Online, by phone, or in person.
