Marion County, Iowa sits within Iowa’s Fifth Judicial District, with all trial court functions centralized at the Marion County Courthouse in Knoxville. The District Court processes filings and maintains official records spanning criminal, civil, family, juvenile, probate, and small claims matters. Court records serve as the formal documentation of judicial proceedings — encompassing docket entries, pleadings, motions, orders, judgments, transcripts, and exhibits produced or filed during a case.

Indiana’s court system maintains a public-facing case search tool, and Iowa residents looking for case information across the state can begin with IowaCourts.us, which provides direction to official state court resources, county clerk contacts, and public access tools. Case records can also be explored through the clerk’s office directly, courthouse public access terminals, and the Iowa Judicial Branch’s electronic docket system described below.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Marion County?

Several access pathways exist for locating court records in Marion County, depending on whether you need a quick docket summary, a certified copy, or a broader criminal history report.

Online Case Search

The Iowa Judicial Branch operates the Iowa Courts Online Search system, which provides free public access to the electronic docket for state court cases. The docket indexes filings, hearings, and proceedings by party name or case number. While docket summaries are available online, viewing or printing full case documents typically requires using a public access terminal located inside the courthouse.

Online Fine Payment

Individuals needing to pay court fines or surcharges related to a case can do so through the Iowa Courts online payment portal, which accepts major credit cards 24 hours a day.

Are Court Records Public in Marion County?

Iowa treats the vast majority of court records as public documents. Iowa Code Chapter 22 — the Iowa Open Records Law — establishes that any person, regardless of residency or citizenship status, may inspect and copy public records maintained by state and local government bodies, including courts. This right is subject to reasonable administrative procedures and fee schedules set by the Iowa Legislature.

However, several categories of court records are explicitly protected from public disclosure:

  • Juvenile delinquency and child-in-need-of-services records — Confidential under Iowa Code § 232.147; accessible only to parties with legal standing
  • Grand jury transcripts and proceedings — Sealed to protect the integrity of the investigative process
  • Expunged and sealed records — Removed from public access by court order under Iowa Code §§ 901C.1–901C.3; this includes dismissed and acquitted criminal cases as well as, in limited circumstances, one misdemeanor conviction per lifetime
  • Protected medical, psychological, and mental health information — Released only by court order or statutory authorization
  • Personally identifiable information — Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and similar data are redacted from public filings under Iowa Court Rule 16.602 before records become accessible to the public

When a document contains both public and confidential information, the clerk will produce a redacted version of the accessible portions rather than withholding the entire record. Individuals who believe a denial of access is improper may challenge it under Iowa’s open records law.

Marion County Criminal Court Records

Criminal court records document the proceedings and dispositions of cases involving alleged violations of Iowa law — from misdemeanor infractions to serious felonies. In Marion County, all criminal cases originate in the District Court and are processed through the Clerk of Court’s Office.

Searching Criminal Court Records

  • Use the Iowa Courts Online Search to locate docket entries for criminal cases by party name or case number
  • Visit the Clerk’s Office in person for copies of charging documents, plea records, sentencing orders, and related filings
  • Pay the $0.50-per-page copy fee and the $50 certification fee when requesting official certified copies

Statewide Criminal History Reports

For a comprehensive criminal history spanning more than a single case or county, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) maintains the Iowa Central Repository and processes background check requests. The fee is $15 per last name submitted, and each name requires a separate request form and payment. DCI checks cover only Iowa records and do not include out-of-state or FBI records.

Arrest and Booking Records

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office maintains records of individuals booked into the Marion County Correctional Facility. Current inmate information is publicly searchable through the Marion County “Who’s in Jail” portal.

The Sheriff’s Office also maintains the county’s sex offender registry information in coordination with state authorities. Arrest records available through the Sheriff reflect booking data and may not include the full history of charges across multiple jurisdictions; requesters needing comprehensive criminal history information should contact the DCI directly.

Expungements

Under Iowa Code §§ 901C.1–901C.3, individuals with qualifying dismissed, acquitted, or single-misdemeanor conviction cases may petition the District Court to expunge the record. Once an expungement order is granted, the affected case becomes a confidential record exempt from public access under Iowa Code § 22.7 and is no longer accessible through the public docket or clerk records.

Marion County Civil Court Records

Civil court records in Marion County cover non-criminal legal disputes, including contract disputes, personal injury claims, property matters, landlord-tenant actions, and small claims proceedings. All civil filings are managed by the Clerk of District Court at the Marion County Courthouse.

An interactive court form for fee deferrals is available free of charge through the Iowa Judicial Branch’s self-help tools.

Small Claims Court

Iowa’s small claims docket, governed by Iowa Code Chapter 631, handles money disputes of $6,500 or less and forcible entry and detainer (eviction) actions arising from landlord-tenant disputes. Cases are heard by a judicial magistrate rather than a jury. The current filing fee is $115 statewide. The Iowa Judicial Branch provides free small claims forms and filing instructions through its self-represented litigant resources, and most filings must be submitted electronically unless the court grants a paper-filing exception.

Property Records

Real estate documents including deeds, mortgages, liens, surveys, and easements are maintained by the Marion County Recorder’s Office rather than the District Court. Recorded documents can be searched online through Iowa Land Records, a statewide database covering all 99 Iowa counties, or through the Marion County Recorder’s property database search tool linked from the Recorder’s Office page.

Marion County Family Court Records

Family law matters in Marion County are handled by the District Court and encompass dissolution of marriage, child custody, child support, adoption, guardianship, protective orders, and juvenile proceedings. The Clerk of Court maintains all family court filings under the same address and contact information as the main clerk’s office.

Divorce Records

Divorce proceedings are filed as dissolution of marriage cases in the District Court. The filing fee is $285. Divorce decrees and related orders are generally public records accessible through the Iowa Courts Online Search or by requesting copies directly from the Clerk. Certain case-specific information — including details about minor children, Social Security numbers, and financial account data — is redacted before public release. Certified copies of dissolution decrees are available at $50 per certification plus $0.50 per page for the document copy.

Domestic Violence and Protective Orders

Protective orders issued in connection with domestic abuse, stalking, or harassment are also processed through the District Court. The Iowa Judicial Branch provides free court forms for domestic abuse and elder abuse proceedings through its interactive court forms system. Records related to protective orders may carry access restrictions when they involve sensitive identifying information about protected parties.

Marriage Licenses and Records

Marriage licenses are issued and marriage records are maintained by the Marion County Recorder’s Office, not the District Court. The Recorder is located on the second floor of the Marion County Courthouse:

Marion County Recorder’s Office
Address: 214 E. Main Street, Second Floor, Knoxville, IA 50138
Phone: (641) 828-2211
Email: recorder@marioncountyiowa.gov

Certified copies of marriage records are available through the Recorder’s Office. Iowa law, under Iowa Code Chapter 144 and Iowa Administrative Code 641–95, governs who is entitled to certified copies. Entitlement is generally limited to the individuals named on the record, immediate family members, and legal representatives. Others may obtain uncertified copies stamped “Not for Legal Purposes”.

Birth and Death Records

Birth and death certificates are vital records maintained by the Marion County Recorder’s Office. The county holds Marion County birth records from 1880 forward. Iowa births from 1984 to the present are available electronically at any county recorder’s office in the state, regardless of where the birth occurred. For births between 1880 and 1983, records are available only from the county of occurrence or through the state.

Each certified birth or death certificate is $20 per copy at the Marion County Recorder’s Office, and an appointment is required for in-person vital records requests. Appointments can be scheduled online or by calling (641) 828-2211. Mail-in requests require a notarized application signature, a photocopy of valid government-issued photo ID, and a check or money order payable to the Marion County Recorder. Records not available locally can be requested through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, though state-level processing typically takes two to six weeks.

Adoption and Guardianship

Adoption proceedings and guardianship matters handled by the District Court are subject to heightened confidentiality protections. Adoption records are not publicly accessible in Iowa without a court order. Guardianship cases may be queried through the Clerk’s Office, though filings involving protected individuals may be partially or fully restricted from public view.

Marion County Probate Court Records

Probate proceedings in Marion County are handled by the District Court and administered through the Clerk of Court’s Office. Probate records document the court-supervised process of settling a deceased person’s estate — including the probate of wills, appointment of personal representatives, distribution of assets, and resolution of creditor claims. The court also oversees guardianship and conservatorship matters for individuals who are unable to manage their own affairs.

Types of Probate Matters Filed with the District Court

  • Supervised estate administration (where the court reviews each stage of the proceedings)
  • Unsupervised administration (where a personal representative acts without ongoing court approval at each step)
  • Intestate proceedings (when a person dies without a valid will)
  • Will contests and estate litigation
  • Appointment of guardians for incapacitated adults
  • Appointment of conservators for individuals unable to manage financial affairs
  • Applications for guardianship or conservatorship of minor children

Searching Probate Records

Probate case records are generally public and can be searched through the Iowa Courts Online Search by entering the name of the decedent or the estate as a party name. Public access terminals at the Marion County Courthouse offer on-site viewing of probate filings and court orders for cases not yet fully digitized. Older historical probate records — including the Marion County Probate-Appearance Docket from 1889–1911 and Record of Heirs and Estates from 1862–1888 — have been preserved by the State Historical Society of Iowa and may be accessible for genealogical research.

Requesting Copies of Probate Documents

To obtain copies of probate filings, contact the Clerk of Court’s Office directly:

  • In person at 214 East Main Street, Third Floor, Knoxville, IA 50138
  • By phone at (641) 828-2207 during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.)
  • By mail, with a written request including the decedent’s full name, approximate filing date, and payment for fees ($0.50 per page for copies; $50 for certification)

Wills admitted to probate become public documents once filed with the court and are accessible through the same request channels. Documents containing confidential information — such as the financial details of protected beneficiaries or guardianship records for minor children — may be subject to partial redaction before public release in accordance with Iowa Court Rule 16.602 and Iowa Code Chapter 22.
