Warren County, Iowa, operates under the Iowa unified judicial structure, with the Warren County District Court serving as the sole trial court for the county. Located in Indianola, the county seat, this court handles the full spectrum of legal matters — criminal prosecutions, civil disputes, family proceedings, probate matters, juvenile cases, small claims, and traffic violations — through dedicated internal divisions. Records produced by this court are official government documents that track filings, judgments, orders, and the full history of each proceeding, and they carry significant value for parties involved in litigation, attorneys, researchers, and members of the public seeking legal history.

IowaCourts.us can help users understand how Iowa’s court system is structured and identify publicly available case information. Are Court Records Public in Warren County?
Warren County court records are presumed public under Iowa Code Chapter 22, Iowa’s Open Records Law. Under Section 22.2, every person has the right to examine and copy a public record held by a government body, including judicial records, subject to specific statutory exemptions. Iowa Code Chapter 22 lists over 50 categories of records that may be withheld from public inspection, including those that would violate personal privacy or endanger individuals.
In the context of court records, restricted or confidential categories include:
- Juvenile court records, which are shielded from public disclosure under Iowa law
- Family law records where minor children’s information, financial account details, or Social Security numbers are involved
- Active criminal investigation materials designated confidential under Iowa statutes
- Records sealed by court order
- Divorce records from which sensitive financial and personal identifiers have been redacted
- Attorney-client privileged communications and related litigation preparation documents
Where a record is confidential, access is generally limited to the parties named in the case, their legal representatives, or individuals who can demonstrate a direct and tangible interest. Requests to inspect potentially restricted records should be directed to the Clerk of Court, who serves as the official records custodian. If a request is denied, the Iowa Public Information Board and the courts provide avenues for challenging the denial.

It is critical to distinguish between criminal court case records — which document proceedings in specific cases — and criminal history records, which aggregate arrest, prosecution, and conviction data statewide. The latter are maintained by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), a division of the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The DCI processes criminal history record checks for $15.00 per last name searched, with each name requiring a separate request form (Form DCI-77) and a separate payment. Requests can be submitted by mail, fax, email, or in person, but not by phone. In-person processing for individuals checking their own records is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The DCI accepts cash, checks, money orders, and major credit/debit cards.
